Globacom to upgrade network with $750m

Indigenous telecoms operator, Globacom, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding worth $750m (about N116.8bn) with Chinese telecoms infrastructure provider, Huawei, to upgrade and expand its network.

The contract, which was signed between in Lagos on Thursday, will see Globacom embarking on a total overhaul of its network with a view to providing better services to its over 25 million subscribers.

Speaking at the contract signing ceremony, the Group Chief Operating Officer, Globacom, Mr. Muhammed Jameel, said for the past two months, the company had been shopping for a vendor to help it modernise its network, adding that Huawei had been found as the preferred vendor for the contract.

Jameel said every element of the network ranging from base transceiver station, mobile switching centres and transmission infrastructure, among others, would witness total modernisation, which is expected to provide world-class services to its growing subscribers.

He said, “As we mark our 10 years of operation in Nigeria, we have decided to concentrate on upgrading our network with the latest technology, which can provide a bullish network that can provide better services to our customers.

“In the contract, new BTS, new microwave radio facilities and MSC will be upgraded to latest ones. It will also include back-hauling of the total network with a view to delivering a total network with most modern equipment.”
