Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang has called for a re-examination of the practice of accountancy to check the growing cases of corruption in the country.

Jang spoke in Jos on Tuesday at the second session of the mandatory continuing professional development programme organised by the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Ignatius Longjan, said despite the strict enforcement of the Code of Conduct of the accounting profession, the level of fraud and corruption in the society had increased significantly.

He said, “It is sad that some acts of corruption are either perpetrated or facilitated by accountants. This calls for re-examination and re-evaluation of the system in order to get to the root of the problem. I therefore challenge the President to critically look into this issue and take necessary steps towards instilling discipline in its members,” he said.

President of ANAN, Alhaji Sakirudeen Labode, said the association was working with other government agencies to adopt fraud prevention mechanism using ‘whistle blowing’ and protecting the whistle blowers.

The ANAN president said that the association was committed to reducing the rate of corporate corruption to the barest minimum in Nigeria.
