The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, has inaugurated golden anniversary commemorative stamps for the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The minister said at a recent event held in Abuja that over the years, postage stamps had assumed wider responsibilities in many societies as they were no longer restricted for use in conveying letters.
The minister said, “The Ahmadu Bello University is making history today as the second tertiary institution in Nigeria to achieve a philatelic status, the first institution being the University of Ibadan, which in 1973 and 1998 used postage stamps to highlight their contributions to Nigeria’s educational, cultural and economic growth.
“These stamps are produced not only to celebrate the golden age of the Ahmadu Bello University as a prestigious citadel of learning but also to document for posterity the noble contributions and lifestyle of our great leader who left his footprints in the sands of time.”
She also said, postage stamps have been used all over the world to send messages across lands and seas, thus accentuating its borderless nature.
“Postage stamp is undoubtedly considered the most effective medium for documenting events of historical significance.
