The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has urged companies and organisations to ensure gender equality during their recruitment period.

The Executive Director of the corporation, Mrs. Omolola Abiola, gave the advice during NDIC’s management parley with female employees on Tuesday in Lagos.

She expressed dissatisfaction with companies that underrated the capacities of women by not employing them, adding that gender equality was key for organisational development.

She said, “The situation in Africa is complex because of cultural believes. Employing women promotes diversity in the work place. We have to stop putting boundary in work place and that can be done by ensuring more gender diversity.

“Women have to be found in certain positions in various companies to promote equality. The diversity of a company lies in the strength of its female work force. Gender diversity is not only important, but agent for women right.”

Abiola further explained that as part of NDIC’s efforts to promote gender equality, it had employed increased number of women in the past two years.

“We have closed the gap in our recruitment. At least, in the last two to three years, we have recruited large number of staff of which women had substantial number. It is important to build the women because we don’t want so has not to kill the system,” she added.

Also, the Chief Executive Officer, Financial Institutions Training Centre, Dr. Lucy Newman noted that women ensured delivery when duties were assigned to them.

Newman, who spoke on ‘Women in management: challenges and prospect in the 21st century’, urged female workers not to compromise when performing their duties.

She said, “It is safer to assign duties to women because of their motherly care. Even when they delegate duties they keep checking back to ensure that everything is alright and result is achieved. They also have positive impact on talent pool.

“Recruiting women is advisable because they minimise group thinking in management decision by enforcing quality decision making, build good relationship with stakeholders among others.”
