TUC advises A’Ibom on employment generation

The Trade Union Congress, Akwa Ibom State chapter, has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to revamp ailing industries and create employment for youths in the state.

The Chairman of TUC in the state, Mr. Ifreke Akpan, made the call on Tuesday in, Uyo during the 2nd Triennial Delegates Conference of the body.

Akpan, who said industries in the state were in very poor condition, urged the government to urgently revamp them, as doing so would create employment and boost the economy.

He said, “Our industries are in  a sorrowful situation. The government of Akwa Ibom State should invest in some moribund industries notably Peacock Paints, Sunshine Batteries, Quality Ceramics Autopack Nigeria Limited and Qua Steel Industry, among others.

“The Trade Union Congress is calling on the state government to see to the revamping of these industries and establish new ones so that the indigenes will have gainful employment.

“Other existing industries should be looked into and proper checks done to favour the indigenes.”

The union also solicited financial assistance from the  government to acquire land for its secretariat.

The union also called on  the  state government to key into the National Health Insurance Scheme as well as provide buses for it.

Besides, the TUC advised the government to embark on capacity building and education of its workforce.

The Special Adviser, Bureau of Labour, Public Service and Productivity, Mr. Godwin Udom, who represented Governor Godswill Akpabio, urged TUC to appreciate what the government was doing for it.
