The Nigerian Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association’s third annual conference will focus on autogas and the environment, the association’s President, Mr. Dayo Adeshina, has said.

The conference, which holds on Thursday (today), according to him, will gather all stakeholders in the country’s LPG landscape not just to look at issues surrounding improving LPG consumption in the country but also to look at autogas potential in the country.

At a news briefing in Lagos, on Wednesday, Adeshina said the conference would provide the platform for stakeholders to look at the challenges facing the LPG industry, and explore the available solutions.

The conference, according to him, will provide a platform for industry operators to interact with the government.

He said, “Nineteen  states in Nigeria are suffering from desertification because people are cutting down trees for firewood. The health risks associated with the use of kerosene, firewood and other solid fuels are enormous and this is killing over four million people annually.”

He said the government must draw a roadmap to solve some of these problems, adding that the conference would provide the right atmosphere for some of the issues to be discussed.

The Group General Manager, Engineering and Technology, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Adebayo Ibirogba, said NNPC, which is one of the largest producers of LPG in Nigeria, would play a vital role in driving LPG consumption in the country.

The Commissioner, Lagos Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources, Mr. Taofiq Tijani, said the state government had adopted LPG as the ‘fuel of choice for cooking and this had been approved by Governor Babatunde Fashola.’

He recalled that the state had initiated the Eko Gas scheme aimed at giving out 30,000 3kg cylinders with burners to rural dwellers in the state.

He said the state government would continue to support the LPG consumption drive, adding that it was on that basis that his ministry would be participating in the conference.
