The Board of Directors of South African Airways has announced the suspension of its acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Vuyisile Kona.

The airline, in a statement from its office in Nigeria, said the suspension was based on certain allegations that had come to the attention of the board.

The airline said the board “has a fiduciary duty to investigate the allegation.”

The statement added, “After careful consideration of recent developments, the board has decided to place the acting CEO, Mr. Vuyisile Kona on precautionary suspension. This suspension is effective from 11 February 2013. It must be stressed that the board has not come to any conclusion as to the veracity or otherwise of these allegations.”

The board said it had embarked on a process to recruit a permanent CEO.

It added, “Applications have been received, and the board is now in the process of evaluation. The board is confident that this process will be completed by 31 March 2013, at which time recommendations will be presented to the minister.”

In the interim, the board has requested the CEO of Mango, Mr. Nico Bezuidenhout, to oversee the activities of the airline.

South African Airways currently serves 26 destinations across the continent, as well as major destinations within South Africa and internationally from its Johannesburg hub.
