The police have vowed to rid the seaports of all miscreants and criminals to improve the operating standard of the business environment.

Newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Nigerian Ports Authority, Mrs. Sherifat Disu, gave the pledge in Lagos, assuring maritime stakeholders of her readiness to make the ports a decent environment for genuine business people.

He stressed that all port rats, as the miscreants and other criminals are commonly called, would be flushed out.

The commissioner made this known when she toured police formations at both the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port Complex in Lagos.

She said there had been complaints from stakeholders concerning undesirable people at the ports.

She pledged to sanitise the ports with the cooperation of its legitimate users and other sister agencies.

“I want to seek your cooperation as well as other stakeholders to get rid of them; I will enforce the law to the letter so that people who have nothing to do in the ports will not be allowed access,” she said.

Disu said further that the bomb disposal and dog unit would be resuscitated to complement the efforts of the ports police.

“Our marine police will patrol the offshore within the ports so that we don’t have those people they called wharf rats coming in to steal,” she added.
