German auto manufacturer, BMW, has set a new benchmark in the coupe segment as it releases to the global auto market a redesigned 3-series couple, which it renames 4-series coupe
The new vehicle has more sporty and premium feel than the 3-series sedan.
The all-new BMW 4-Series coupe marks the beginning of a new era for coupes at BMW, says an online automobile news media, Auto news.
Described as the latest generation of BMW’s sporty mid-size Coupe, the new BMW 4-Series Coupe embodies the very essence of dynamics and aesthetic appeal in the premium segment, says an auto enthusiast and reviewer, Mr. Woodcliff Lake.
Engine
The new BMW 4 Series coupe is offered as both a 428i, featuring BMW’s award winning TwinPower Turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and as a 435i with the multi-award winning Twin Power Turbo 3.0-litre inline six.
Both are available with a standard eight-speed sport automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
They are also offered with a choice of rear wheel drive or with optional xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system.
The 4 series is 2 inches longer than the outgoing 3-series coupe at 110.6 inches and is 1.7 inches wider at 72 inches. It is also about an inch lower, giving it a sportier appearance.
A convertible version of the 4 series convertible will be introduced next year, the manufacturer has said.
Exterior
An online review of the car by Kelle Blue Book states that although the vehicle shares basic chassis design with the 3 Series Sedan, the aluminum-intensive suspension hardware on the new 4 Series Coupe has been specifically tuned for this application.
It notes that in addition to the 50-50 weight distribution, reduced ride height gives this new BMW the lowest centre of gravity of any model in the auto maker’s lineup.
There is an extensive use of high-strength steel in the vehicle, which helps bump rigidity in the front structure by 60 per cent. This also contributes as much as a 99-pound reduction in overall curb weight compared to the 3 Series Coupe.
Unlike the 3 Series it replaces, the front fascia on the 4 Series puts its own more aggressively sophisticated spin on classic BMW design cues, subtly integrating its forward-canted twin-kidney grille with recast quad-headlamps, including new optional full-LED units.
Like the Concept 4, it also features subtle Air Curtain slots that improve the overall flow characteristics as well as Air Breathers on the front fenders that reduce downstream drag around the wheel arches.
A flowing roof that emphasises the wedge-shaped profile resolves into the car’s short deck in near-fastback fashion.
Collectively, those elements combine to give the new 4 Series an exemplary 0.28 coefficient of drag as well as aero lift characteristics equal to the current M3 Coupe.
Interior
The manufacturer, in a statement on the product, says in the BMW 4 Series Coupé, one is more than just the driver. One is the centre. This is because the interior designed is aligned entirely towards the driver for maximum ergonomics and it offers a sporty ambiance with maximum driver focus.
Inside, the new 4 Series has the driver-centric theme.
All 4 Series models come with 10 years of eCall and enhanced Automatic Collision Notification, as well as BMW Teleservice.
This new car also has the latest iDrive 4.2 system, and the models with the optional navigation package have the new Touchpad-enhanced controller.
Performance
The new 4 Series is equipped with BMW’s Driving Experience Control with Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and ECO PRO modes that tweak various power-train and chassis settings to suit a given driver’s preference.
BMW says the ECO PRO setting can cut fuel use by up to 20 per cent.
Safety
A number of safety/security features have been specially enclosed in the new vehicle.
Some of the available features are the latest-generation high-res Head-Up Display, Active Driving Assistant collision warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go Function, Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Parking Assistant and Surround View Cameras as well as High Beam Assistant with intelligent control for cars fitted with the LED headlamps.
The car also has wind-cheating underbody fairings as well as ‘Auto Start Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration systems plus energy-saving on-demand operation of various ancillary devices.
