Market capitalisation rises by N147bn

Trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange closed positive on the second trading day of the week as indicators recorded significant appreciation.

 The market capitalisation of the listed equities rose by N147bn or 1.4 per cent from N10.525tn on Monday, to close at N10.672tn.

Similarly, the NSE’s All-Share Index increased by 461.35 basis points or 1.4 per cent to close at 33,351.71 points, from 32,890.36 points recorded the previous day.

The NSE-30 Index rose by 1.5 per cent or 23.38 basis points, from 1,574.24 points to close at 1,597.62 basis points, while the NSE Banking Index rose by 0.6 per cent or 2.36 basis points from 415.28 basis points to 417.64 basis points.

The banking sub-sector maintained its lead on the activity chart, with investors exchanging 198.60 million shares, worth N2.519bn in 2,373 transactions. Activities in the banking sub-sector accounted for 42 per cent of total turnover.

Volume in the sub-sector was driven by trading in the shares of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Access Bank Plc and First City Monument Bank Plc.

Guinness Nigeria Plc recorded the highest price appreciation of the day, rising by 9.4 per cent or N24.87 to close at N289.90 per share.

Unity Bank also rose by 9.2 per cent or seven kobo to close at 83 kobo per share.

Oando Plc and Nigerian Breweries Plc gained 8.7 per cent and 6.4 per cent to close at N1.60 and N10.54 per share respectively.

On the other hand, DN Meyer Plc lost the highest, shedding 10 per cent or 24 kobo to close at N2.16 per share.

Presco Plc lost 5.9 per cent or N1.49 to close at N23.80 per share.

Royal Exchange Plc lost five per cent or four kobo to close at 76 kobo per share, while John Holt Plc and Premier Breweries Plc shed 4.9 per cent each to close at N1.72 and 77 kobo per share in that order.

In all, investors staked N4.825bn on 474.67 million shares, in 6,492 deals, compared to 700.209 million shares, worth N2.675bn traded the previous day, in 5,724 transactions.
