The Legal Aid Council, Kano State Office, and Northern Nigeria Flour Mills have sponsored skills training for 27 inmates of the Kano Prison, preparatory to their release.

The Kano State Coordinator of the council, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Saturday that the inmates were trained in baking and textile technology (tie and dye).

Umar said, “We are trying to make sure that inmates are trained in various trades to enable them to be self-reliant after re-uniting with their families.

“The council is also making efforts to see that the state government gives the trainees the capital to start their own businesses when they return home.”

He explained that the council was collaborating with Nigeria Bar Association, Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria and other Non-Government Organisations to ensure the release of inmates, who had stayed in prison for many years without trial.

He added that the collaboration was also aimed at improving the condition of prisoners in addition to decongesting the prisons.

Umar said, “We pay frequent visits to prisons in the state and this is giving us the opportunity to discuss with inmates and see their conditions.”
